Traditional braces turn crooked smiles nice and straight, but they come with some serious drawbacks.
Most notably, a lot of people don’t like the look of having a bunch of shiny metal brackets in their mouth. Also, braces can be quite uncomfortable.
Enter Invisalign, a more attractive, more comfortable way to correct crooked teeth. Interested? Here are 5 things you need to know about Invisalign:
1. Invisalign Isn’t Actually Invisible – But It’s Pretty Close
Invisalign mouthpieces aren’t technically invisible, but they are very transparent. Most people aren’t going to be able to see them at all.
At first, though, people will probably be able to hear that you have your mouthpieces in – it’s a little hard to talk at first. But don’t worry, you’ll get used to it and start talking normally in no time.
2. They’re Less Painful Than Braces
Braces have to be tightened every once in a while, and this can be very uncomfortable, even painful. Invisalign mouthpieces never have to be tightened, and unlike braces, you can take them off whenever you want (just make sure you wear them for at least 20 hours every day).
3. Eat Whatever You Want
In addition to how they look and feel, braces are also annoying because they restrict what you can eat. Popcorn, bagels, and hard candy are all out of the question.
Not so with Invisalign. These mouthpieces are removed before mealtime, so you can eat pretty much whatever you want. You do have to brush after every meal to keep your mouthpieces in good shape, though, so keep that in mind before you decide to start chewing on something that’s hard to clean up after.
4. Insurance Might Cover It
Some people assume that Invisalign isn’t covered by insurance. But that’s not necessarily true. While that is the case for some plans, there are many insurance providers that do cover Invisalign.
You’ll have to ask your provider to find out. If it’s not covered or you don’t have dental insurance, let your dentist know and you’ll likely be able to work out an affordable payment plan.
5. Some People Aren’t Able to Get Invisalign
Most people can get Invisalign, but not everyone. Those with gum disease, loose teeth, jaw problems, and other issues may not be able to receive this treatment. Check with your dentist – they will be able to advise you whether this is a good choice for you given the condition of your teeth.
